Midnight Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama (1989)
Midnight Pumpkin is an example of Japanese contemporary art using acrylic on canvas. The polka-dotted pumpkin has become the international logo and personal trademark of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. This painting is held in a private collection in Asia. Aztec Tenochtitlan Mesoamerica Mural by Diego Rivera (1945) Rivera's famous larger-than-life mural depicts the great Aztec marketplace and life in Aztec times. Rivera was a prominent Mexican painter. His large frescoes helped establish the mural movement in Mexican and international art. The Ninth Wave by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1850) Ivan Aivazovsky, a Russian Romantic artist, is considered one of the masters of marine art. This painting depicts a night storm, with warm tones offsetting the power of the raging sea. This painting can be found in The Hermitage in St. Petersberg, Russia. Nihonbashi Bridge in Edo by Katsushika Hokusai (1830) Hokusai was a Japanese artist of the Edo period. Nihonbashi Bridge in Edo is an example of one of his famous woodblock ukiyo-e prints. It has views of the central district of old Edo, including the arc of Nihonbashi (literally, "Bridge of Japan"), the tiered roofs of Edo Castle and the distant Mt. Fuji. It is held by the Met in New York. Carnival of Harlequin by Joan Miro (1924-25) Carnival of Harlequin is a climactic work from a series of paintings by Joan Miró infused with the color scheme and landscape of his native Catalonia, Spain. It is currently on display in the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. Guinea Hen Feeding by Clementine Hunter Hunter's paintings are most famous for her colorful scenes of daily life on a Louisiana plantation where she spent most of her life. Her paintings are considered important documentation of plantation life in the early twentieth century. |
